Credit Repair Companies
For many people, the first time they realize they have bad credit is when they’ve been turned down for a credit card or a loan. Bad credit is another way of saying low credit score. If your credit score is too low, banks and other lenders will be reluctant to let you borrow money. Maybe you missed a few credit card payments, or were late paying off a loan. Whatever it is, it’s damaged your credit score.
Credit repair companies – what can they do?
In theory, credit repair companies can’t do anything that you can’t do yourself. Sometimes they can do these things better. As with anything else, by hiring a professional, you are paying for their expertise. Chances are, this is your first time trying to fix your credit score. Legitimate credit repair companies deal with these issues every day.
Despite what some credit repair companies advertise, they cannot remove negative information from your credit report, whether it’s missed payments, a bankruptcy, a court judgment. The only exception is if the information is wrong to begin with.
Myth 1 – All credit repair companies are scams
With the proliferation of credit repair companies on the internet, it’s easy to assume that they’re all scams. Fortunately, this isn’t the case. There are many legitimate companies out there offering a useful service. The key is to find one that isn’t promising more than it could possibly deliver. Find out exactly who you’re dealing with before you hand over any personal information.
Myth 2 – You have to hire a lawyer or a credit repair agency to fix your credit
You do not have to hire a professional to repair your credit history. There are many things that you can do yourself to improve your credit score. Start by making payments on time. Each time you miss a payment, or are even a few days late, it hurts your credit score. If you keep up with the payments, you can actually boost it.
Check your credit reports for errors on a regular basis. Otherwise, you can end up with a low score through no fault of your own. If you do find a mistake on your report, file a dispute as soon as possible via the credit bureau’s website. You don’t need a lawyer for this, either.
Myth 3 – It is both complicated and difficult to repair your credit
It is neither complicated nor difficult to repair your credit. You just have to know what sorts of issues to raise your credit score and do them. For example, it’s good to have different types of credit, such as credit cards, loans, and mortgages. It’s also good to have a long credit history. Do not close old account just because you’ve paid off the debt. Keep credit cards active. This will show lenders that you can be trusted in the long run.
Myth 4 – You can repair your credit instantly
Your credit history didn’t get damaged overnight, and you can’t repair it overnight, either. Any company that promises to significantly improve your credit score in a short period of time is lying. The only way to do this would be to erase the negative information from your credit report, which is impossible, unless the original information was incorrect.
Depending on the extent of the damage, it can take years to repair your credit. Do not get discouraged. Nothing stays on your credit report forever. Even bankruptcies are eventually erased. Give it time, and stick to your long-term financial plan.
